Shortly after graduating, she followed in the footsteps of her mother and many other family members to pursue a career in teaching. Ms. Winter received her Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from California Lutheran University and plans to pursue a Masters within the next few years. Ms. Winter’s educational philosophy is to intrigue, excite and inspire her students to help them truly value and enjoy their education. She has a strong passion for education and absolutely loves working with children. As a former student of Meadows Elementary, Ms. Winter is beyond thrilled to return to the school and work with the energetic and passionate MATES staff.

Box Tops!

Hello Room 11!
I want to remind you of the new procedure for Box Tops collection. This year, we ask that students cut out and glue the box tops on to a sheet. This helps alleviate the very tedious task of counting each individual box top at the end of the trimester. I understand this does add one more thing to your own plate, so I suggest you ask your child to be in charge of this task. This helps them take responsibility and ownership for their donation to our class, and if they glue as they go, it won't be as long of a job. The deadline for boxtops is October 26th.
Thank you for helping out MCN in this transition and helping our classroom win the box top context!

Ms. Winter

Election for MATES Board of Directors

Hello Room 11!
Today, in your youngest child's Wednesday folder, you will receive your family's ballot for our MATES Board of Directors election. Please read the directions attached to the front of your ballot carefully. We ask that you vote for up to 3 candidates to fill 3 open seats on the Board for the June 2018-June 2020 term. So, this does not mean you have to vote for 3 people, but you can vote for a maximum of 3 people. If you want to know more about this process, please see our Board Member Recruitment and Election Policy on the MATES webpage.
Thank you and happy voting!

Mark Your Calendar: LCMS Tour Date!

Hello Room 11!
We just received notice from Los Cerritos Middle School about a date for our students to come and tour the campus. Our students are invited to visit the school on May 18, from 9:30-11:30. This is an optional trip for any students who would like to see the school and learn a little bit more about it. Any child attending will need to be signed out in our office and parents will need to provide their transportation to and from LCMS.  The child can ONLY be signed out by someone on his/her emergency card, so if you think you want to carpool you MUST check that the parent driver is on your child's emergency card ahead of time. Students should arrive to LCMS by 9:15 to sign in and will need to be picked up promptly at 11:30am.  Parents may stay, but it's geared for the students. Students are responsible for any classwork missed during this time.
Parents will need to call LCMS to RSVP at 805-492-3538.
Happy visiting!
Best,
Ms. Winter

STEAM Night February 22nd

 Hello Room 11!

STEAM Night is returning to MATES on February 22nd! This evening will focus on integration of Science, Technology, Art and Math. There will be engineering challenges for the family, exhibits of STEAM in our community, and displays of the science and technology fair submissions. Like last year, the Science Fair entries may be an Investigation, Rube Goldberg, or an Invention. The Tech Fair submissions may be Digital Photography, Commercial, or Game. Students who enter submissions will receive a special spirit stick. We will discuss these projects in class and students who choose to create a project for the fair will earn extra credit in science for my class. This fair is not meant to be a competition, so the projects will not be scored. This is meant to be a fun exploration for students to do with family and friends. I have attached the science project info for your reference. My next post will have the tech requirements. Be sure to read these over for project, ideas, guidelines, and due dates.

Happy exploring!

Internal Organ Hall of Fame Play

Hello Room 11!

The time has come for our actors to start preparing for our class play, The Internal Organ Hall of Fame! Please mark your calendars. The play will be on February 9th, at 8:30 AM for parents. If you cannot make the 8:30 show, you are welcome to come to the 10:30 AM student show. Please, please double check your calendar and let me know ASAP if your child will NOT be present for our play so I know in advance when it comes time to cast everyone. The students have been reading the play over the last two weeks and we will have recess auditions next week. They know that ALL roles are crucial to the play and if they do not get their first choice, that they must be flexible and take on any part that we need. :) I know they will be great!
Stay tuned for more updates!

Ms. Winter

Shoe Boxes Needed!

Hello Room 11!
When we come back from Thanksgiving break, our students will be starting another interactive science investigation that requires shoe boxes. We need one box per group of students, so I am hoping to collect at least 11 shoe boxes. If you have a box at home you are willing to donate, please feel free to send it in ASAP. Otherwise, if you could keep your eyes peeled for a box over break and start bringing some in the week we are back that would be fantastic! They will need the boxes by Wednesday, December 6th.
Thank you for your help!
Best,
Ms. Winter

Volunteers Needed for Lunch Service

Hello Room 11!
Each week, our wonderful Ruth Shramek could use some volunteers to assist in serving our fantastic new lunch program to students. Parents who volunteer can earn a free lunch for their student, and can earn up to one of these per week. Please see the link below for volunteer sign-up via Sign Up Genius. Your help would be greatly appreciated at either lunch time (11:40 or 12:15). An updated monthly link is also available on our MATES website, but this one is for November.
Thank you!

Ms. Winter

Explorer Presentations

Hello Room 11!
The Explorer Projects have now been assigned. Your students picked their explorer and their presentation date (see attached) on Friday. They have a research packet they must complete, and it includes an outline space to transfer info into a more compact format. That outline will then be made into the 4-5 notecards they will use during their oral presentation. Today, your child got a planning sheet to help plan their time management for this week's research portion of the project. Please review this with them. We will plan for the digital poster and presentation next week. They will be introduced to the website for that digital poster in computer class later this week. The hope is that they will see how to plan out a long-term project to avoid stress and procrastination!
There is an opportunity for extra credit if your student wants to dress up as their explorer. They would just bring the costume with them on their presentation date and change before it is their turn. Students are not expected to go buy a special costume for this-- homemade costumes and accessories are encouraged! :)
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions.
Best,
Ms. Winter
