welcome the purpose of this video is to teach you how to access our libraries online circulation system to locate books by topic and you can access the system from our mates website under resources scroll down to online library or you can go to The Who We Are staff directory find my website and then hit visit website both place will take you to our library search engine the first thing you're going to want to do is tie Denna fight a topic or jonra that your student is interested in this could be dogs friendship mystery Adventure really whatever your student likes to read about let's try putting an adventure pet go and if you look here it's telling you that we found 580 facts about Adventure that's quite a few to look for for your student so I suggest narrowing the search before we do that I just like to call your into the call numbers at the bottom of each of these books elections if you know that your student wants to read a fiction chapter book which is typically what AR tests are on they would have a call number the book will have a common number that looks like this pic and then the first three letters of the author's last name if you see account number that has an e this means it's a picture book and if you see one that has a number that means it's non-fiction and there's just a few exceptions to that which would be fairy tales and graphic novels but typically numbered books are okay so 587 bucks too many to sort through so if you go to the left to narrow your search you can start with Accelerated Reader it's important to know what your students ranges at this point we will pretend that the students that were working with has a reading range of 2 text which is 2nd grade 6 month too let's say 3.7 you hit apply and now you can see it's taken that 500 odd books down to 96 choices so that's quite a bit narrowed if you'd like to go further than that I suggest looking at the extent or pages of each books so some kids really are fine with reading a longer book there is not so much it looks like with the reading range that we put in the highest number of pages is going to be 233 but if that's too many student lets say 170 pages is about their limit hit apply and now you've got 77 books tell you can play around with that in many different ways to narrow your search another one I recommend especially at the end of the trimester when kids are trying to finish up their AR points is to do it by just that AR points you can go down here and let's say they don't want to read a book that's less than two set a scroll over hit apply and I've only got five bucks out of those 500 so that deeply narrow your search the next thing that you're going to want to do is to start looking at what the topics are so if you scroll over next it'll give you a little summary it's a 2.9 AR level three points published in 2013 it's 166 pages this section it'll give you a summary of the book close it here this is something worth paying attention to as well if the book is in meaning it's not checked out to another student it'll say in if you see lost it means it's lost and if you see out that means it's checked out to another student my suggestion is that you spend about 10 to 15 minutes with your student at home the night before their Library class and do this put some topic when do a little searching around and create a list of maybe two to five books that they're interested interested in Reading if you write down the title on the call number when they come into Library we can quickly pull those books from the shelf for them and it'll be a really effective use of their reading time I hope this is helpful and if you'd like to learn more or you have any questions please feel free to stop by the library anytime I'm here between 8 and 3 everyday happy to answer your questions
